hey yall!! it's been a while since i've been able to get on here!! i hope you are all having a great new year. i have a question about gidget... she's been "honking" more than usual here lately and i wondered if its a reverse cough or a reverse sneeze that i've been reading about.... whats the difference? a min ago she sounded like she was hocking something up a little bit... she was running around outside earlier so maybe thats why? just wondering what yall know about it and if yall's chi's do it often?

Hi, glad to see ya, it's been a while. Anyway, Radar would do it usually after a walk with his collar. I guess it was from all the pressure on his neck. Since we've had him walking in a harness, and only wearing the collar for ID, he's been doing it alot less. Although, he still does it a time or two after getting excited, or getting the zoomies. It could be that it's just her excitment or it could be something else. I'm not sure. But, I hope my post helped ya out alittle. I'm sure someone on her will have some great advice and info for ya!

Sounds like it is reverse sneezing.  We have that going on a LOT around here.  Some chis do it more than others.  All of mine do it, but Jax does it most, followed by Hershey then  Sassy.  Sounds awful and I really hate when they do it.  It looks painful, but from what I understand, it's nothing to worry about.  I have no collars on mine.  I am sorry to hear that it's happening more than usual for her.

Hey girl!  It's been too long!  Good to see ya back!  My new year is brilliant so far, thanks!

It sounds like Gidget is reverse sneezing, yesI dont know what the difference is between reverse coughing and reverse sneezing, and actually I've not heard of reverse coughing before!  As Rosa and Jenn both said it is not anything to worry about too much, and you can prevent it, to an extent, by not using a collar and lead when walking her.  The Chihuahua's Trachea is very delicate and sensitive and using a collar when walking on a lead can harm it causing the Chi to do this reverse sneezing.  They also seem to do it when they get overly excited.  As long as Gidget doesn't do it a lot I wouldn't worry about it.

I have only heard Chewy do the reverse sneeze once when he was younger. I know Chewy coughs a lot when he gets over excited and tries to sound bigger than he really is but it's not reversed. Chewy doesn't wear a collar or a harness since we don't go anywhere really. I suppose my advice would be to see a vet if it gets any worse or sounds really bad. Keep us updated!!

Koapaka will do that when he is excited. When someone comes to visit and he runs to the door, he graps a soft ball. It stops him from getting out of breath.
