Bandy and the Doctor

Bandy had to make an unscheduled trip to the vet this afternoon.. Those of you who have known Bandy since I got him at 5 weeks old are already aware of the problem with his shoulder and front leg. One of his little legs appears shorter than the other one and there is a curvature in his shoulder which combine to give him a limp. The vet suspects the damage was done to the shoulder in the birth canal. At 10 months old, Bandy has been able to live relatively unaffected by this defect. Today, however, he would cry out in pain whenever he turned on that side, or if the baby Kona would jump on his side. When he awoke crying out this afternoon, I called the vet and took him over to be checked out. She worked with his shoulder joint and leg and decided that he has obviously injured it probably playing with the new pup. She prescribed "Metacam," a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug which will help with the pain as well as the inflamation in the shoulder. It is most often prescribed for the control of pain and inflamation associated with osteoarthritis in older canines. Hopefully, Bandy will not have to remain on the meds very long, just till the injury to the shoulder improves.. Just like with ppl, Nsaids are rough on the stomach for pups.

Hope he feels better soon.  One suggestion would be to give him some plain yogurt in his food while he's on meds - the live cultures work as well for dogs as for humans in settling a tummy and giving that good flora a chance while on any types of antibiotics or Nsaids

Oh, poor Bandy!  How horrible for him!  Not exactly pleaseant for you either!

Metacam is a good drug.  Expensive, but good.  My step father's Weimaraner has been on it about a year.  He has a chronic hip problem.  I dont suppose Bandy will be on it so long though!  lol

Thanks for letting us know what was going on with our little Bandy Bandit!  Could you please send on a gentle tickle and pat from his Auntie Jess?

I am glad to know what was going on with Bandy. I was sure you'd be telling us soon. I hate to hear he has been in any discomfort at all, but it's great that you've taken him and now hopefully all will go well. I wish him all the best, BIG HUGS to Bandy from all of us here!

Bandy and I both thank you girls for the good wishes...he is definitely a little better today.. Jess, you sure are right about the medicine being expensive. His little 10 ml bottle was $25, and that was with my vet discount of 10% since I have so many of their patients!! lol
