Weird new phobia-HELP!

Well, we got a new microwave. Yay! I've been lost without one. But we have a problem. This one has a different beep. Niles Patrick is TERRIFIED of it. I don't know why. He's six years old and never cared about a microwave before. He has gone from being terrified of the microwave to being terrified of anything he hears happening in the kitchen for fear we will USE the microwave along the way. He cries, he pants, he shakes, he tries to climb over baby gates, he digs the closet door open and hides in the closet, it is MAJOR for him. It's been a week and he shows no signs of getting over it. I try not to fuss over him when he's acting so foolish, although I do pick him up when he's climbing the baby gate for fear he will fall. I don't coddle him, I just set him right back down.
Is there anything I can do to help him? It's in the 90's with near 80% humidity so not using the microwave is NOT an option at the moment.

Aww the poor baby... Reckon that particular "beep range" could actually be hurting his ears? I don't know if this is a possibility, but does the microwave have a particular spot where the sound generates from (like a little "speaker") area? If it does then perhaps you could cover the spot with a piece of duct tape or electrical tape to mask the sound a bit?? Deb

I can't imagine it's hurting him. The rest of the dogs don't even blink. Well they look at HIM like he's nuts, but they don't pay any attention to the microwave. I'll have to see if there is some way to muffle the sound without blocking air flow. This afternoon, Niles heard my son's alarm clock and went into a panic about THAT beep now. This is probably going to sound stupid, but could it be some kind of stress thing from his sister Lily dying? Is that even possible? This is so odd and I feel so badly for him.

Wow! So sorry to hear that your poor baby is suffering! Maybe it does hurt his ears?? Keep us posted on how he is doing. Sorry I can't be of any help.

I am afraid I don't have any answers, but I am so sorry this is happening. I feel sorry for him. I just don't know why that has got to him so badly.

UPDATE RE: Weird new phobia-HELP!

Well we have been using the microwave normally, and just ignoring Niles as he pants and tries to climb our legs. I did put a big blanket on the bed so he could hide under it, and my little sissy boy sticks his head under there with his little fat butt hanging out in the air. LOL He is slowly calming down about the beep.
 I cook for the dogs and freeze two weeks of food at a time. The food HAS to be microwaved to mix with the kibble. Finally he is catching on that the BEEP means I just might be making him something to eat. smile
The funny thing is, the last microwave was like a dinner bell for the dogs. They all knew that the microwave beeping might involve getting fed. They ALL remembered that with the new microwave except him. Go figure.
Anyway, he's much improved, no more drooling and carrying on. He is still VERY suspicious, and makes these adorable little faces trying to peek at that evil microwave, but he's not going to stroke out on me any more. Yay!
