Little men....
Permalink Closed

My mom is thinking on getting a little male who is about 14 weeks old, but she is concerned about him marking in the house.  If all goes right, she may like to have him as a stud, so he would not be getting fixed any time soon.  Does ayone have any experience in this area?  Thanks!

Belly bands will be your friend. Actually, it depends on the dog. I have one little guy that was neutered AFTER one litter. He has never marked on anything. I have another dog that was neutered VERY young (he has tiny little goodies), and he likes to mark everything. No one has told him he's not a macho stud. LOL My two young guys have literal pissing contests and will really follow each other around and make a mess if I'm not watching them. Mostly when a girl is in heat. I use potty pads and put a 20 ounce Coke bottle in the center filled with water. It gives the boys something to "mark" that doesn't make a mess.

Honestly, if she is going to have a stud in the house, he probably WILL mark something eventually if he's intact. And if he's been in a kennel with NO supervision for marking, it will probably be an uphill battle. She can use belly bands though, or even a small Ace bandage with a panty liner inside if it is an issue. Is she willing to do taht ALL the time if necessary?
If she is totally going to freak out about marking though, she should probably rethink the whole stud thing. There are no guarantees.
I know a breeder that keeps her stud boy in the kitchen with no carpet and only lets him out with a belly band so he doesn't have to wear it all the time.
Your mom needs to know the answer to one question. What will she do if he DOES mark everywhere all the time. If she can find an answer that she is ok with, then go from there.

I've never had a problem with Cha Chi marking in the house. He does mark every tree and bush out front though. I haven't had a problem with Boomer either, but he is only 6 month old.
I don't think my daughter has had a problem with Taco either, unless she leaves a plastic bag on the floor( why he feels a need to mark those I don't know). I guess it just depends on the individual dog and how you react to it.

Thanks for the help girls! Mom has decided not to get a male, just in case, but she has decided on another female. She wanted another pet, with the idea that she might use him as a stud, but she doesn't want to exclude a dog for doing what he does best, lol, and it doesn't seem fair to have a boy barricaded in another room all the time by himself, she really wanted another companion. So female it is :) Thanks again, you all have been very helpful!

It's great that you're mom made her decision. It really is best to think it out, to figure out which sex is better for you and your household. I'm sure she'll be happy with her new female! I can't wait to see pics *hint hint* when the girl comes home!

It is funny, my shihtzu does the same thing with black garbage bags.  Aparently he wants them all for some reason, to be tagged with his scent.  I don't get it!  Maybe it has something to do with the smell of the plastic or something, but it drives me crazy!!!furious
