Ticked off at vet

We do NOT use lepto here. I know some of you probably do, but we've had bad reactions twice and after reading online, we won't use it. Chihuahuas have such a high incidence of reactions, it's not worth it to me.
Anyway, our vet knows this. So we have the puppies going in for their first shots and he tells us he REFUSES to give them a vaccine without lepto. furiousFor crying out LOUD, even Dr. Foster and Snith recommend vaccines without lepto for pups this young of ANY breed. Grrrr.
Now I'm going to have to find some strange vet at the last minute. Don't you think he could have told us this before now? And we are going to have to TOTALLY switch vets, because I'm not bouncing all over the place or arguing about lepto for my adults later. disbelief.gif

A bit of an update. We have a new vet. In the next state over. biggrin I'm close to the state line and have been calling vets all morning. I won't deal with rude staff first of all. If they can't be kind to ME, they aren't going to be around my pets when I'm not there. That took a few off the list right away. The others were either so over the top expensive or too far away.
I finally started looking on the other side of the state line. I found a vet that has a SUPER staff helping me with questions over the phone. She was shocked that I could not get vaccines without lepto and said they won't give vaccines WITH lepto at all any more. She was politely horrified that my vet wanted to give chihuahua puppies lepto. They have a whole dental clinic, a boarding facility and office hours six days a week.
They have insanely cheap prices for people that only want rabies vaccines because they would rather have the dogs vaccinated than not. They even have a coupon for a free health check with rabies, which tells me thay have concern for the pets over cash.
We will be making an appointment next week. I'm hoping this is not too good to be true. If they are decent, I will be thrilled!

Yay, I am so happy for you! Vet's can be so expensive, and I wonder how many of them really enjoy their jobs, and how many would quit if it wasn't for the $$$$! Good luck with the new vet, I hope that the clinic is all it's cracked up to be!

Here is the coolest part! For me anyway. If I have foster dogs or cats, they will update the shots for me for $22!! Seriously. Rabies AND all the other stuff. Are you KIDDING me? I thought I died and went to heaven. The last foster dog we had cost me $150 for shots and checkup! And last summer, we spent well over (I'm whispering, so don't tell my mother this part LOL), three THOUSAND dollars on foster cats.
Even if I'm not thrilled with this vet, I will definitely bring all the fosters through for shots at least!

You are so right. Our vet is older and I knew we needed to look for one soon. This just gave me the push. He has a younger gal in with him now but I do NOT like her. I took Niles in because he had this funk on his forehead and in his armpits. I asked her if she had ever seen anything like it. She said, "What, a dirty dog?" and walked away. She's lucky I tend to be quiet because I was FURIOUS. Oh and my "dirty dog" has food allergies. I found that out when we switched foods and all that crud went away. We were bathing him, scrubbing his little armpits, alcohol swabs, antibacterial soap, you name it so I knew it wasn't dirt. That still makes me mad. LOL I wanna go give her SUCH a pinch every time I think of that.

Well, come on then. You smack her while I pinch her.biggrin The staff knows that I don't want her near any of my dogs now. The vet tech that was in there at the time just froze when she said that. The older vet is SO nice to the animals, I'm sure she will not be appreciated in general. Ah well, hopefully I will love the new place and not have to worry about them.

Thanks Deb! And yes, it really is my birthday. Well, yes and no. After I found my birthmother I was told that today is NOT my birthday, but after 42 years, it's hard to switch. <g> So I still celebrate today. I'm 43 today, and my son will be 23 on the 26th. He keeps getting older and dragging me long for the ride. LOL

I hope the Vet works out too. I know what a hassle it can be. Anne and I have gone through several until we found our current Vet. She is older, an old country girl. She takes in strays all the time. She is real inexpensive too. It's nice to know they care about your pet more then the money. Best of all she is less then a mile from me.

I refuse to give rabies shots on my dogs except on Taco as he is a snappy with strange people so he has to get his rabies as I take him out in public and people don't even ask if they can pet him it's so rude they come up and just start touching and he hates that I try to tell people if I see them comming that he could bite. I had to give panda a rabies to ship her and she had a reaction to the shot had to medicate her and she was fine. So since mine stay in and are never outside without someone withthem they don't need it and my vet will board them without it since she does the other shots
