Age for first heat ?
Permalink Closed

What is the approximate age that ya'll have found for your female's first heat cycle. Abby was 11 months and the vet seemed a little surprised she was that old. Roxie will be 8 months old on the 30th of this month. So should I be on the look out soon??? Doc told me with these little dogs they could come into heat as early as 5 months!!! Now that seems a little young. Since this is only my 2nd little female I wanted to get an answer from some of you who are seasoned veterans in the chihuahua field. Abby is spayed now, after her first heat because we decided she was too small to breed, but we are planning to breed Roxie Anna when she become old enough.

My breeder told me that about 7-8 months is what they've generally found.

Ellie's breeder told me it would not be surprising if Ellie didn't come into heat for the first time until she was a year old.  She told me that little dogs often take longer to get started.  I'm assuming this is because toy dogs live longer so are not in such a huge hurry to reproduce.  But that's ust my guess!  Lol!  Ellie first came into season at nine months old.  Her seasons eem to be every seven months instead of six.

I guess I had better be on the watch then. Do you use the little panties things for your dogs in heat if you are not intending on breeding? Abby bled heavily so we HAD to use something on her. I have bought several cute pair for Roxie.Hope she does not try to chew them off.

Where were you able to find them small enough? I'd like to have a pair on hand for Corona, just in case... but she's not even 4lbs, I'm not sure I can find any small enough!

Stacey, Try Drs. Foster and Smith or Petsmart. I got mine from Fosters and Smith and then these last cute ones with bows on ebay that a lady made.

Ellie has a pair of 'bitch britches' that were custom made for her by a little company online.
They're brilliant, as it means that during that first week when they have a discharge that they aren't isolated because you dont want them on the furniture/pick them up.  I highly recommend them to everyone with a bitch that isn't spayed.
Here are a couple of pictures of her in them...

Jess, Those are so cute. Ours are like that but with out the straps. Two pair have bows above where the tail hole is and the other pair that I bought from a pet supply catalog is plain denum. I put panty liners in them.

I'm thinking Roxie must be going to be a "late bloomer", but that is okay with me.
