Watery eyes.
Permalink Closed

Radar tend to have really watery eyes. Most of the time they are like this. Poor thing, half the time it looks like he has been crying. They get extremely watery when the wind blows, but I can understand that, I mean that makes my eyes water. But, is it normal for his eyes to be teared up like this all the time? I am not sure if that is a Chihuahua thing, or if I should worry about it.

Yes it is very common. Some more then other. I would worry more if they watered alot and where swinty they can get allergies like us. I wouldn't be too worried if there jst watery though. Some of mine do more then the others.

Okay, well, atleast I don't have too worry about it. I was getting sorta concerned about it after it lasted a while. I am glad it's a common thing!

Some dogs get runny eyes from allergies... food allergies, or allergies to an element outside.  I have even heard that tap water can cause runny eyes.

Some times at night Rylie's eyes start to water... but I think she's just because she is sleepy

It is indeed quite common. Hershey has that prob sometimes. They can have allergies though as said. I hope it's just regular watery chi eyes though.

Poor Radar, I swear sometimes it looks like he is really crying! I just wipe away his tears, and go on. We've never had any other problems with his eyes, just the watering. I am hoping it's just the chi thing, and not the allergies!

I dont have much to add, the others did a great job!  Just wanted to add my agreement that it is a Chi thing.  Being so close to the ground and having such large eyes, they get dirt in them all the time.  Quite often I'll see that Ellie has stuff on her actual eyeball, but she doesn't seem to notice it!  I guess she's just so used to it it doesn't bother her anymore!

Rosie got more watery eyes when my husband was remodelling our basement - it was the dust.  Chis are so close to the floor that even minute particles can start their eyes watering.  Lately it's not been too bad but I often have to wipe them dry with a tissue and she just stands there and puts her little head up for me to do it!

Koapaka has watery eyes every once in a while and some times he just keeps blinking an eye. I hold him and gently blow into that eye and it seems to take care of the problem.

poor thing must be very uncomfturble

squinting or tearing can be due to an irritated cornea or foreign body. examine under the lids, and flood the eyes with saline solution or use a cotton swab to remove any debris. if no improvment is seen after a day, have ur vet take a look .

a watery discharge without squinting can be a symtom of allergies or a tear drainage problem.a clogged tear drainage duct can cause the tears to drain onto the face rather than drain normally through the nose. if u take ur dog to ur vet they can diagnose a drainage problem with a simple test.

and other than that tearing is a indication of an illness ur dog may have and only ur vet can tell u if its serious or just allergies or irritation well good luck hope ur baby gets better.

p.s tearing is not a chihuahua thing just to let u guys know.

I would have to disagree with some of that - tearing is a common chi problem - it's listed on all the chi sites - they are low to ground - have small tear ducts - watering eyes doesn't mean a blocked tear duct in most cases - it's when they try to water and can't if tear duct is blocked that you have a problem  - eye lids would swell and become infected.
Having tear ducts checked if blocked is minor - but the dog does need to be sedated or under anesthetia when they do this for their comfort so I guess it's all in how you think minor is defined
If the watering is lot - you can simply wipe with soft cotton ball (don't rub tho) - this is mainly so you don't get tear stains - tearing isn't hurting their eyes (even tho it doesn't look good to us LOL).   You may want to watch if the tearing is only at certain times - that may mean allergies.  My Bella and Bindi tear always - that's just them - but Bruno only tears at times - mainly when he's under or behind the couch chasing dustballs LOL - so i know his is allergies.
