I have always kept a leather collar on Ellie, except at night when I take it off. They've always been quite sturdy types; it is hard to find a plain leather collar that I like that doesn't cost the earth, so am sometimes reduced to buying collars made for slightly larger dogs! As you might remember Ellie has had a funny skin irritation on her neck and inner elbows which seemed to last just 24 hours and then mysteriously disappeared. Well, ever since that time last week I have noticed that the fur around her neck, mainly on the under-side, is thinner. I am thinking perhaps it could be something to do with the collars? I dont know and am begining to worry it might not grow back! She hasn't had a collar on for a week now, I thought I'd give her neck a rest. Do any of you have any ideas or advice? I really need your help!
I know I can't be of too much help, but I know about a year ago I had to stop putting collars on Hershey due to redness and irritation around his neck. When that started happening I stopped all my chis from wearing collars. Now it's nothing but a harness if/when we go out, and that's rarely. Sounds like she is just really sensitive and you might do best just to keep collars off of her. I hope it clears up and her fur thickens back again.
All of my kids wear collars and harnesses all the time because they are always on the go. I do notice that the hair is a little thinner where the collars sit. I wish I could take them off more often, but I have 6 little escape artists that go everywhere with my sister or I.
I'm thinking about getting a really lightweight collar for her. I'd like her to wear one so I can hear where she is all the time, but I think the heavy leather needs to go. What d'you guys think of this one?:

My pets own me and I am proud of it ;)
If the collar is too big, it could be rubbing which would cause the hair loss. It could also be the leather -i've had dogs allergic to certain collars (the rope or braid ones, plastic, etc.) I'd try to switch the collar. You can also use bag balm on her skin if it's really irritated - should be able to get it at walmart, target, whatever is local store in your area. A little safflower oil in her food will help also - not a lot tho - i give a tablespoon to my 100 lb saint bernard - so just a little :) It helps their coat. Don't use any other oils tho, as they're too fatty for the dogs. My saint (a long haired) came in as a rescue at 74 lb after having had a litter 4 weeks before and no hair on her backend (kenneled too much). I gave her safflower oil and some other nutrients and within 6 months her skirt was back as well as feathers on her back legs.
Thanks a lot honey! It's so reassuring that someone else knows what I'm talking about and has had it happen to thm!
Ellie has now has that little pink collar for about a month and it is sooooo much better! Her skin is no longer pink and the hair on her neck grew back nicely and completely. I guess she's just a sensitive lil pup! lol
