I am very confused on something, when I got draco he seemed very normal and had no problem with his health. When he turn 3 months old I started to notice he had one testicle. I asked the vet at Petsmart and all she told me is that he was young it will drop later. Now I work at a Pet store and we have our own vet as well , I asked them and they told me all dogs no matter the size should drop both testicles at the age of 2 ~3 months. My son is 5 months old now and all he has is one testicle. I get alot of answers and I am so confused is this normal? I am planning to fix him but I wanted to breed him if he droped. Now those anyone had this problem or knows any suggestion.
Normally, a chihuahua should have dropped testicles by the age of 2 months. A dog without dropped testicles is called a cryptochoroid, and it is a heriditary condition. Even if your dog's testicles drop late, I would not recommend breeding him as this condition can get passed down to his puppies. If your dog's testicle does not drop and you do not get him neutered, you are putting your dog at a higher risk of getting testicular cancer. Even a female dog can carry this gene, and pass it down to her puppies.
The longer the dog goes without having the testicle drop, the smaller chance the dog has of it ever dropping.
Normally, a breeder who has a dog with an undescended testicle at the age of 6-8 weeks will sell their dog on limited registration, and/or a neuter contract.
i had a pom with one testy, and i was told to get him neutered because it also could lead to health problems. and the pups could have birth defects also.
huh?, that stinks for you. I wonder if you can remove the one that has not dropped but leave the one that has?...I guess it wouldn't matter if it would cause more problems with breeding and health. I don't have much advice either....luckily for me the vet told me Oliver's "little money makers"....as the vet called them...lol...said Oliver's had dropped and everything was all good!....good luck with that. I hope that the stubborn one will finally give.
Well, the thing is, the undropped testical is a genetic condition which is inherited from the parents. This heriditary condition is embedded in the dog's genes, so even if the testicle does drop, this condition will be passed down to the puppies (who will in turn continue to pass this condition down their line).
A dog with one testicle should be neutered... the surgery is more invasive than a normal neuter, but still less invasive than a spay. I would recommend having your puppy neutered before 6 months of age, because even dogs with one testicle will have the same amount of "bad habits" as an unneutered dog with 2. Also, the longer you wait to have the undescended testicle removed, the larger your chance of health problems occuring are.
Thanx very much everyone most of that I had research and new , I was worried to see what I am looking at a ball park of price to fix him. I talked to his breeder about this and she told me that his dad had none till 6 months old than he dropped. I told her that it could come from his mom side. The weird thing he is the only one out of his litter that came out that way. I told the breeder that she should warn the girls if they are going to breed even his brother about this. She said she will so we will see and to make it up she said I will get pick of the litter of her next litter that doesn't come from his genetic pool. Again thank you all very much for your help.
Please do not take offense to this, because I am not trying to sound mean... but your breeder should not have bred a male whose testicles didn't drop until he was 6 months old. This explains why your little guy's testicles haven't descended... it was passed down from his father. A responsible breeder will research all aspects of breeding extensively, and should know this. And, if a breeder has puppies with this condition, they will retire both the parents from their breeding program.
The price of a neuter will vary extensively... it cost about $200 with blood work to have my male, Madison neutered. I know that many vets do the procedure for cheaper.
Again, I would be very wary of a breeder who is breeding dogs with this genetic condition.
Well I couldn't comment on the price of the op as we live in different countries so the prices will be different, but I absolutely agree with the other things Jessie said. I wouldn't go near a breeder who has that genetic fault in her bloodlines. Even if she offered me pick of the litter for free. You could easily end up paying out thousands to correct any damage that that genetic disorder brings about. Cancer, of course is the biggest concern. The families the other littermates went to should also be told. It may never be a problem for them, but they should be aware so they can be prepared and so they dont breed them. You could perhaps make that clear to the breeder.
I'm sure you know all that, so I wont go on. Let us know how it turns out sweetie!
I was going to stud him out. MY female is fixed I got scared by people telling me when I got her that chihuahuas usually die when they give birth. Now I know the truth about it. However when I got him I didn't want to deal with the birth I just wanted to stud my boy and when they where born get pick of the litter.
