Is this a suitable crate?
Permalink Closed

I have pet rats, and recently downsized their 6ft cage (yes I know, I am a "little" obsessed and built them a huge cage) because they're getting quite old. The cage I bought to replace the homemade one is a Nero 3 Rabbit I think. I was wondering if this would be suitable for a Chihuahua? I know it is an odd thing to have as a crate for a Chi, as it is technically a rabbit cage, but it is very similar to the one a friend had for their Chi when it was a puppy and it was very happy in there. It has a door on the side, and a large door on the top. Obviously without the ledge thing inside, would this be ok for a Chi? Or would it be cruel? I'm looking at it now and it looks like it would fit a Chi fine, but then I'm not experienced with the idea of crates with dogs so I'd love to hear what you have to say smile Thank you smile

I would not put a Chi in a cage meant for small animals. There are lots of types of crates that are intended for dogs. I would just buy a crate that is made for dogs, not a cage for rabbits or rats. In my mind, that could be alittle harsh for a Chi. If you search around some, I'm sure you'll be able to find a crate that will suit your Chi's needs. I have a Port-a-Crate for my Chi, it is perfect for what we needed. It is made from strong nylon and mesh, and has a steel frame inside that collapses down for easy storage. I have a small one for traveling and visits and a medium one for home use for both dogs.

I've just had a look on Google at the Nero 3 and I dont think it would be suitable for a dog, no.  I dont think you want anything with bars like that to be honest.  Dogs tend to love their crates, and I think the reason behind this is that it is like a cave (a dogs natural living space).  And in order for a dog to feel thhis the crate needs to be enclosed and dark.  The one I have for Ellie is ideal, here is a pic of a similar one (Ellie's doesn't have quite so many slats on the side and none on the top)...
