Wormer question
Permalink Closed

We took all the babes today and got wormer. Now, the local vet is OLD, but he's really close. So as long as everything is fine, we've been going there. The wormer he gave us was Drontal. I haven't seen Drontal in a long time. And tablets no less! I'm just wondering what everyone else has gotten for wormers. If you've gotten wormer from a vet in the last year or so, can you tell me what it was? Also, if you have a really "cutting edge" vet, would any of you consider calling them and asking them what they would give 3 week old puppies? I'm kind of nervous about this. We had a BAD time with a wormer once and I don't remember what it was. That vet has passed away so of course I can't find out either.
I haven't given them the wormer and will NOT give it to them until the office is open tomorrow just in case there is a problem.  Chihuahuas and medicines always freak me out.

I just called my Vet and she uses a liquid wormer. She said it is "Strongeteen". I think thats how you spell it. At least thats how it sounds.
When I first got Boomer I had to take him in to be wormed and that is what she used. It didn't make him sick or seem to bother him at all and he was only 1.4 lbs. He was 10 weeks old though. I did se something called "sure Shot '2X' by Sergeants. It said on the bottle you could worm the pups at 2 weeks.
Hope this helps you.

Well we went back to a different vet and got liquid pyrantel. There was no way to get the other stuff down them in tablets anyway. Janie's kids all ate it and made wee little ick faces. Sad but terribly cute. LOL Maya's kids ate it and all barfed. So I won't be using that again with her kids I don't think. I will ask about the stuff you mentioned Louise. Thanks!
BTW, my mom is Louise and is also "Weezie".

The Liquid from Sergeants is also pyrantel. Maybe it was the amount they took that made them barf or maybe the taste. The one from Sergeants says it has a good taste.
My husbands name is George and I'm Louise. Thats how I came to be called "Weezie" to begin with( after the Jeffersons).

Well, my dad was Jack not George, but my mom was always "Weezie". Or Weezer. The pyrantel was supposed to be flavored, but from the looks on their little faces, it was not impressive. Hopefully by the time we worm them again, tablets won't be an issue.

Pyrantel is what i've always used - BUT in the vet tech course i'm taking now, i just got a list of what is safe and what is not for breeding animals and/or pregnant ones -

Ivermectin is listed as the only safe and best one for while pregnant or if going to be used for breeding

Praziquantel/Pyrantel/Pamoate/Febantel is listed as one NOT to give to pregnant or breeding animals

Now - i believe that is just that particular combination as the Pyrantel Pamoate combination only has no mention of safety/toxicity in breeding animals (which according to my instructor means it probably hasn't been tested and/or no adverse reactions reported)

Know i'm kind of late with this :(   but i'm just learning as I go along too.  I'll post on my discussion forum for the course if it's just that particular combination with the 4 components - because i'm nervous about having used it.   Most of the "over-counter" wormers pet stores sell have pyrantel in them.

There's also a list of 7 other wormers on the chart from my class if anyone is interested in them.

Thanks Sue! I'd love the info on the other wormers also. I use Panacur for my adult fosterss normally.
