Pixie is loosing so much hair!!! I took her to the vet and said that is normal as she doesnt have bold patches...She said that she is just changing her coat. But this is being going on for maybe 5 months now.Her hair r just everywhere,on our clothes,etc...What can be the problem and what can I do?

She could be blowing coat which is normal... that may take a month or two when that happens. The other thing could be allergy or diet related. When they continually shed hair, that could be telling you that she is allergic to something, possibly in her food. What are you feeding this cute little gal? How often to you bath her and with what?

She eats kibbles or I cook for her chicken with vegetables.
She had dry skin as well so the vet gave me some oil to add to her food.
I bath her once a month with a puppy shampoo.
She is shedding an enormous amount of her....I am brushing her as well now when I am home!

It could be her kibble, read the ingredients list, what are the first 4 ingredients? It could very well be the fillers in the kibble. Just some ideas... the baths could be drying out her skin a bit to. I doubt it, but it could be a possibility. I bathe my boys about twice a year, one is for a flea/tick dip right before flea/tick season rolls in. The other is a follow up if needed. I know Jess has alot of experience/info on allergy related issues. Maybe she will pipe in!

Thanks for your reply.
When I go home, after 2 weeks, I will check the ingredients on the kibble.

I'm sorry to hear Pixie's having trouble, poor baby!  It is true I have hd a LOT of allergy problems with Ellie and have had to change foods like 5 times in the spae of about a year!  lol  How much kibble do you give Pixie?  What brand is it?  I seem to remember that you can only get Pedigree Chum in Bahrain, is that still the case?  The thing is Pedigree Chum, despite it's publicity, is a bad food.  The only reason it is revered as it is is due to the company dishing out the dollars in sponsoring events such as Crufts!  It does not deserve the reputation that it has, they use poor ingredients.

I reently discovered Ellie has a sensitivity to feathers of all things!  She only ever scratches herself when she's on our bed and we have feather pillows and duvet.  In Ellie's case it couldn't have been the fabric conditioner or powder as all her stuff is washed in the same stuff, so it has to be the feathers, but Pixie could have an allerfy to your washing powder or softener, especially if you use biolgical detergents.

Jess thank you for your reply.
I give her Purina kibbles,about 1 cup.
The upsetting thing is that I took her to the vet when I was home and she nearly didn't even look at her and charged  me 50 USD. I don't mind at all to pay,but at least....
If she has an allergy, how can I found out what kind of allergy she has? When I am home I don't give her the kibbles and still she is loosing hair.If I pull the hair from her neck (not very hard obviouslybiggrin),they come out a handful.
What can I do???cry

Hey Elena - sorry Pixie's having so much trouble :(

First - i'd have her rechecked by another vet.   They can do other tests to see what it is.
While it's true even smooth coats shed or "blow" their coats - 5 months seems a long time.  I've seen, on my own pups, it take that long or longer for the new coat to come in (mine are all LC), but not the shedding part.

What oil did the vet give you?   Safflower Oil is good to add to their dry kibble for hair loss and regrowth - plus dry skin.

It does almost sound like allergies  but hair loss can also mean inadequate protein intake.  If you want to see if it's her food, you'd need to leave out what you think the cause may be (i.e., the dry kibble) for about 2 weeks.   Give her a bland type diet - brown rice and hamburg or chix and add some oil.  If she doesn't seem to be shedding as much, something in the food may be the culprit.   Then, if you want to add another type of kibble, you would have to thoroughly check the ingredients and slowly add it into the rice and burger/chix mix to swap her totally over.

Or, as Jess says, it could be an allergy to an actual "product" - detergent, fabric softener, material of her bed, etc.  And Jess is your best bet as to how to find out if it's that :)

Don't be afraid to 'prod' your vet for info. You are paying them for a service so make sure you get what you went in for. I have also found that doing as much research as you can on your own before seeing a vet. This can help you to avoid costly and un needed tests. If you are not satisfied with the answers they give you, don't settle with that.

Keep us posted on her progress!

I agree with you 100 %.
It happened the same before. I went there because she had an ear infection and the vet told me she didn't have anything! Then I asked here on the forum....Pixie had an ear infection.I had to go back to the vet and pay again!!!!!!!!

I aI am back home!smile You can't believe how happy is Pixie!smile
Anyhow the kibble she was eating was Purina.
My husband changed the brand,he bought Pedigree kibbles,4 days ago. I think she is not shedding as much hair as before.Maybe if she had an allergy to the food it will take time before I can see an improvement?

Wow, I bet she bounced off the walls and ceiling when you walked through the front door, huh?!  Awww!   Make sure you get some updated photos of her for us as soon as you can, k?   wink   biggrin

I think changing her food is a good step towards discovering what it is she is allergic to, if indeed that is the issue.  When I Googled Purina I discoverd they did about 7 different types, do you know the name of the one you were using?  So she's on Pedigree now?  If she was allergic/sensitive to something in Purina it should take a few wekks before you start to see a difference, I would've thought.  Assuming that Pedigree doesn't have the ingredient that she is allergic/sensitive to!  lol

If the Vet is sure it's not a skin disorder then my bet is that it is caused by something lacking in her diet.  Making her food yourself is wonderful, the best option in my mind as you know exactly what is in it, but it does mean that it is very easy to miss out some vital minerals and viatmins.  It may be that she is missing something like that that you will need to start adding to her food when you cook it.

I'm sorry it has taken me SO long to reply to this, I have been lacking the brain power I needed in order to write properly!  Stupid M.E. brain fog!  This is actually my fifth attempt at it!  lol

Thank you for your reply Jess!
The Purina kibbles she was eating was Purina Puppy Chow.
Now she is eating Pedigree with meaty bites for adults.
I really hope that she will become better!
I will post some pictures soon!smile
