Bone fighting advice
Permalink Closed

Hi everyone,
I am having some problems with Bella and Bailey getting VERY angry over. So the scenario often goes like this, both dogs get a bone, all is great and they "hide" it when they are tired of chewing on it. Later one finds a bone and the other wants it, snarling and fighting takes place, kinda scares me. Also, even if there are two bones out at one time, Bella (who can get on the couch, Bailey isn't big enough yet) will go and take his bone and put it on the couch so he can't have it. That sure makes one mad Bailey. Right now they are not together when I am not home, as Bailey is still learning where his piddle pads are and what he is suppose to do with them (for example NOT chew them up LOL) But I am concerned when they are okay to leave out and alone that I will come home to one hurt dog and one munching a bone dog. Any ideas to stop the fighting so we can all just get along? LOL

Honestly? Don't let them have bones unsupervised. If you are leaving, pick up the bones. As long as it is ONLY bones, it's easier just not to put them in a position to fight. There is no sense letting things escalate if just picking up the bones can stop it. If they fight even with you there, let them ahve their bones in crates, separate rooms or not at all. Maybe find something different that they don't fight over.
I can not put any kind of rawhide chew bones down if Gabby is in the room. She is a psycho dog if there are any kinds of rawhide. It's her only "thing". So they have Nylabones and no one screams. LOL

What is it about rawhide bones? My parents mini schnauzer is the perfect lil angel but bring a a piece of rawhide around her and she turns into a little she devil. Weird.
I give all my girlis those beef pulls, the ones made out of dehydrated bulls "you know what". I find that they don't bloat up the girls bellies like the rawhide. They sometimes get a bit snarely but quiet down when Mama puts her foot down. Usually Piper, our Lab, comes in finds all the bones and chews them in about five mins flat. It usually takes the chi's a couple of days to get through one.
I agree with Karen though.. seperate them for thier chew time.

Yeah, I agree with the girls above  above.gif  .  Seperate them or dont give them bones.  Do they ever fight over their normal toys?  It's likely that they will at some point challenge eachother for posisition of 'top dog' in this sort of way, but if it's avoidable dont let them hurt eachother.

Does Bella not use the pads?  Is she trained to go outside?  If she does use them then leaving them together might be good as Bailey will take his lead from her and use them.

Oddly enough, my two will share the bone. I usually trade off on who gets the bone first. If I give Boots the bone first, I let him gnaw on it for a bit and then let Binks gnaw on it... after that, they are pretty much on their own. They seem to share very well for the most part. But I do agree with the others that if they fight over the bone, then only under strict supervision would allow them to do so.

One thing that I have tried, specailly if I have two bones, I put a bone in each bed and attempt to make them get in their beds respectively to enjoy their bones. But it usually ends up in the other wondering what the other has and they trade beds, bones, and everything else. LOL!
