Rear dew claws??
Permalink Closed

My mom's chihuahua Chica has both dew claws on her front and on her back legs, and neither her other baby nor any of mine do.  I was just wondering if this is common?

I do not think they normally have dew claws on back but do on front. Roxie had one on the back that we had taken off because it was just kind of hanging there. My breeder told me that occasionally they will throw a pup with a rear dew claw but normally take it off when the pup is just a few days old to keep it from hanging it or scratching itself in the eye. That is just what she told me..... I am no expert by far. But Roxie was a few months old before we had hers snipped off.

I think you are correct Becky. I had Poodles years ago and two of the pups had a dew claw on the rear. The vet removed them when he removed the tails. I noticed it on one of the pups from the last litter Imp had too. If I had noticed it when they were first born I would have had my Vet remove them but I told the couple who got him and they said they would have their Vet look at them. I havn't heard from them yet as to the outcome but their Vet is a family member so I'm sure it has been looked at.

All dogs are born with dew claws, they are the remnants of thumbs.  They are usually just on the front, and are most often considered a deformation if they're on the back too.  Over here you cannot show a Chi with dew claws on the back legs.  Ellie actually had them so the breeder had them removed at a few days of age as Ellie was meant to be a show dog.

It's not a problem, but just tell your Mum to keep an eye on them as they can sometimes tear off easily.

Some breeds actually REQUIRE rear dewclaws and other breeds even require double ones. It's really breed specific to what is "correct" now. Since dogs are all the same on paper before we tampered with looks, it's not surprising that rear dewclaws pop up in all breeds now and then. Duncan had rear dewclaws actually. It's not terribly common in this breed, but unless you are a breeder, you'd normally never see them anyhow. They are usually removed.
