Eats her own poop
Permalink Closed

My dog Phoenix always eats her poop and it is really disgusting.  I asked my vet about it and he told me to get some nasty tasting stuff to put on it, but I don't see the point of that cuz come on!  What could be nastier tasting then eating your own poop?!

And not only that, she'll drag it onto the living room floor after taking a crap.  And she only does it when I'm not looking.

What would you guys do about it?

I'd do what the Vet suggested.  For some reason, dogs find poop SO yummy!   I'd put nasty stuff on it and just keep as much of it picked up as possible.  So many of us have had this problem.  Luckily, mine care nothing for their own poop, we just have to make sure the gate for the cat littler boxes stays up, they will go crazy for the cats poop!  Ugh.... LOL!

Jenn, Ellie also loves cat poop!    So gross!  Luckily we dont have a cat so it's not an habitual problem!  Phew!

April, I'm not sure what to suggest I'm afraid.  Have you Googled it?  Many of my questions and worries have been relieved by research through Google!  The only thing I can think of is that perhaps Phoenix is missing something in her diet which is making her do this.

Let us know if you find anything that helps!  I'd be really interested to know why she's doing it.

Love, Jess x

Tucker is totally fascinated by his own little tootsie rolls!  Joan, my breeder, told me to put Adolfs meat tenderizer on their food (and the cats food as well) it makes the pooh taste bad.  So Tucker no longer eats it, but he will still go into the potty pad and carry pieces around and leave little surprises for us to find when we get home!  Can't figure out how to make him stop doing that, but at least he's not eating it anymore.  She told me this is very common!!  The Adolf's costs about $3 and it is totally worth it!!

Brandi did the same exact thing.  The vet told us that the dog thinks its doing you a favor by cleaning up after itself, don't know if its true or not.  But our vet just told us to pick it up as soon as possible and tell her no thats nasty, seems to have worked for us.  Brandi has been leaving it alone.

Bella did this too when she first came home to us (at about 3 mos old). I instincively did what brodyslove sugested, saying "no that is nasty!" Not sure if that did the trick or if she is just "growing out of it" She is 7 months old now and has not done this for some time. Also, she just loved my cats poo so (and i have 5 cats!!) so I went and got a litter box that is deeper and has a little flap door, Bella can't get in there so that solved the cat poo prob. So just keep working with her and tell her "no" I think as she grows she will get it. One other thing I was told was not to let the dog see you pick it up cause they think that you will just pick it up and it is okay to leave a nugget whereever, I tell Bella to go to the corner (which she knows well) and then i clean it up. Good luck and keep us updated!

we've used the Adolf's on to keep the kids out of the cat poo. My cats are picky and wont go in any litterbox other than the plain old uncovered one (and we've tried them all) It stopped everyone from eating the cat poo, i'm sure it'd work with the dogs too...

Ewwww and i thought it was just my Tippy being gross lol. Precious never has had any interest in poo but Tippy is just icky about it. She'll run right up to Precious when she's using the pad and grab her poo and eat it...or try to. I've started scaring her by saying "Tippy!" in a scolding voice when she does this and she gets the message but she also trys to dig it out of the cat litter box. I keep it cleaned out as much as i can but there are times when i just cant be there to catch her getting into it.

I don't know why but alot of animals seem to want to do this. Disgusting! I have also found that dog not just chihuahuas also like cat poop. Pup seem to want to eat there poop more hen an adult. I wonder if they learn this from there mom sense mom cleans them as young pups. I don't see any of my adults do this, Except the mommas with there babys.

DOGS DONT EAT THERE POOP BECAUSE THEY LIKE OR BECAUSE THEY ARE CLEANING AFTER THEMSELVES ITS BECAUSE ITS NOT GETTING THE NUTRIENTS AND ALL THAT FROM HIS OR HER FOOD THAT SHE IS GETTING SO YOU SHOULD PROBABLY JUST CHANGE THE FOOD SOMETHING THAT WILL ACTUALLY SATISFY YOUR DOGS STOMACH OR YOU CAN ALSO JUST PICK THE POO UP RIGHT AFTER DOG HAS FINISHED THAT WAY YOUR DOG WILL HAVE NO WAY OF EATING IT. WELL, GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING
